Twenty-Seven

“She will be bait,” Berphomet said, tapping his goat foot lightly at the periphery of the summoning circle. “A succubus to attract a succubus.”

“How will that work?” Abi asked. “I can’t charm a full demon. I’m just a hybrid.”

The demon chuckled. “Ah, if only we knew of a witchcraft goddess who could remedy a solution.”

All eyes turned to Hecate.

“She will be a full demon.”

“What?” I blurted out. “No. Fuck no!”

“Warlock,” Hecate said. “Let me finish or I will turn you into a weevil and crush you with my toes.”

I stopped talking. Because I chose to and not because her tone made me want to evacuate my bowels.

“The solution, a literal one in this case, will be highly volatile,” Hecate explained. “Both magically and biologically. For the duration of an hour—I will give her no more lest the change be permanent—Abigale will be a full succubus. This means that she will not have access to her magecraft, but all the full powers of a demoness.”

“Why?” Abi asked.

“Supply and demand,” Berphomet said. “Your breed is already in short supply, and with the Emperor’s attitude toward demons leaving Hell—even to breed—there has been a halt in numbers.” He cocked his head. “That, and many have opposing views to his current regime. You shall find more than a few prisoners currently calcifying in the dungeons. Retainers of the Emperor, however, are given a degree of freedom.”

“Hang on,” I said. “So the plan here is for my girlfriend to turn into a sex demon, pretend to be part of the Emperor’s harem, and sneak us in?”

Berphomet bleated out a chuckle. “If only. That is only stage one of the plan.”

“What are the other stages?”

He bared his teeth in a grin. “Oh, I am so going to enjoy this.”
